Few tips to consider before buying home furniture

Buying furniture for home? here are few tips that you should consider before buying furniture.

The home interiors are the best reflection of the personalities of its residents. Whether you go for the minimalist look or modern, it does say something about your style, preference, and choice.

When talking of home decor, we may talk about paintings, vases, showpieces, and what not. However, the fact remains that the first thing that makes the look of a room is the furniture.

Whether you are refurbishing your house or getting a new one constructed, if you’ve to buy new furniture, here are a few tips that will help you make a better decision:

1. Size :

Always remember that the size of your furniture must be in proportion to the size of your room.

Think Small

Whether you’re furnishing a bedroom, living room, or bathroom, it’s key to pick pieces that are small in scale. Below are some examples:

A compact dining or kitchen table: Instead of a rectangular or square dining table, choose a versatile or compact version. Options that create extra space include: round, collapsible, and wall-mounted. Tables with drop or butterfly leaves can be expanded when necessary, but can be made smaller for everyday use.

2. Material

Be careful while buying wooden furniture. Furniture made of particleboard and medium   density fiberboard is also called “solid wood”. But furniture made out of these is not worth buying, as it is harder to repair and heavier than real wood. Buy furniture with signs that explicitly say solid oak wood or cherry wood or ash wood. These are safer to  buy.

If you are applying finish on your furniture then remember to account for humidity. High levels of humidity in the air will prevent the finish from drying and it will turn  white or have a dull finish. If a professional is finishing your furniture then allow the piece to dry completely, for a few days before using it.

3. Style

The furniture you pick up must go with the rest of your rooms.

So if you want to include embroidered cushions, block printed curtains, lots of Indian artifacts etc, you might want to have a divan with bolsters and a couple of low armchairs. A mild steel sofa set with leather upholstery might look out of place.

Also make sure the colors of your furniture match with the walls, curtains and other elements in the room.

Choose the minimalist furniture style if your living room is small because it tends to make it look more spacious.
